Concert musician, musicologist and teacher

Lorenzo Ghielmi dedicated himself for years to the study and performance of the music of Johann Sebastian Bach. He has performed the complete organ works on the Ahrend organ of San Simpliciano and has made numerous recordings as an organist, harpsichordist and with his ensemble "la Divina Armonia". It has an fortepiano identical to the instrument of Gottfried Silbermann played by Bach, with which he has repeatedly performed and recorded "the musical offering". He is a teacher, for the Bach repertoire, at the prestigious Haarlem organ academy and in 2020 he will be among the jurors of the Leipzig Bach competition. He has several times participated in the Bach-Festival in Leipzig, playing one of the dedication concerts of the organ of the Thomaskirche. In 2018 he inaugurated the Utrecht Festival, dedicated to the Lutheran reform, directing a program of Bach Cantatas; he has been the guest conductor of the Salzburg Bach Gesellschaft several times. He has published some articles on the Bach - Vivaldi concertos, on the last counterpoint of the Art of Fugue, on the Prelude and Fugue in D minor BWV 539 and on other aspects of the performance practice at the time of Bach. For his profound knowledge of organ building art has been consulted several times to create new instruments that can revive the Bachian aesthetic. He also composed the completion of some Bachian fragments (BWV 573, BWV Anh 200, BWV 753, BWV 1080).

Lorenzo Ghielmi has devoted many years to the study and interpretation of music from the Renaissance and the Baroque as organist, harpsichordist and conductor. He gives concerts throughout Europe, in Japan and in America, and he has made many recordings for radio (BBC, WDR, MDR, Radio France, NHK) and for an extensive discography. His recordings of Bruhns, Bach, Handel concertos and the concertos by Haydn for organ and orchestra have been awarded the "Diapason d'or". Ghielmi Lorenzo is the author of a book on Nicolaus Bruhns, and several studies on the art of the organ in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries as well as on the performance of the works of Bach. He teaches organ, harpsichord and ensemble music at the Civica Scuola di Musica di Milano. From 2006 to 2015 he has been Professor of Organ at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Basel. He is organist of the Ahrend organ in the Basilica San Simpliciano, Milan, where he has performed the complete organ works of JS Bach. He has served on many juries of international organ competitions (Toulouse, Chartres, Tokyo, Bruges, Freiberg, Maastricht, Lausanne, Nuremberg), and has been entrusted with conferences and specialised courses in many music institutions (Music Academy of Haarlem, Mozarteum in Salzburg, Conservatoire National Superieur de Musique in Paris, Hochschule für Musik in Lubeck, New England Conservatory in Boston, Academy of Music in Krakow,....) . He has also supervised the construction of several modern organs, including the monumental instrument in Tokyo Cathedral and of Palma de Mallorca Cathedral. He conducts his own ensemble La Divina Armonia, touring through many Festivals in Europe and Japan.
